Jack's Land
by Louisa Warren
illustrated by Alexandra Asher

Jack Watson has just arrived in a strange land. The wooden buildings that line the wide dirt streets are nothing like the stone and brick buildings on the narrow cobbled streets of home. And his first glimpses of this new country leave him in awe of the native men whose faces are covered with fierce tattoos.

To a young English lad, emigrating with his family to New Zealand in the 1860s, life has become an adventure he could not have imagined.

The four-month sea journey is terrible, but arrival brings the promise of a rich and exciting life in the new land. Only a day after the ship docks Jack is aching to explore; then Reilly the ruffian turns up and excitement turns to fear. The adventure has begun.

Follow Jack's exploits in the first in a new series of stories set in the exciting early days of New Zealand.

As an English teacher with more than 20 years experience, Louisa Warren began writing Jack's Land and the other books in this series while teaching boys with reading difficulties. The adventure stories, set in the early days of New Zealand's colonisation were written as easy readers, and combine exciting storylines with a style and use of language that encourages reading and improves reading skills.
